Trump Follows The Arab Dictator’s Guide To Dealing With The Media

Most people would have viewed it as the most minor slight. Nearly all experienced leaders would have overlooked it. But the photo of Hosni Mubarak and the Belgian Foreign Minister, with the sole of Karel De Gucht’s shoe facing the then Egyptian president, insulted the Arab leader so much that he had the AFP photographer who took it permanently banned from the presidential palace.
Stories of heads of state interfering with the work of the media often crop up in seemingly trivial ways. But these interjections pave the way for more repressive measures, eventually threatening the foundations of a free press.
And they’re not just happening overseas: Last week, President-elect Donald Trump lashed out at the media — specifically NBC — for publishing unflattering photos of him that show his double chin. As a candidate, Trump was never shy about conveying his dismay for conventional media. Now, as the next president, he is poised to threaten it.
His ongoing rhetoric against the press and threats against specific outlets may seem novel and bold, especially to his supporters whose distrust in it has served as a rallying point, but nothing about these tactics are new. Before even moving into the Oval Office, Donald Trump has engaged in practices used by strongmen in other countries for decades — practices upon which more serious crackdowns are built.

Dolly Parton Is Raising Money For Tennessee Wildfire Victims

Country singer, Dollywood founder, and Tennessee native Dolly Parton is giving back to her community after it was ravaged by wildfires.
At least seven people were killed in wildfires that spread across the Great Smoky Mountains National Park over the last week. Thousands of people were evacuated and hundreds of homes may have been destroyed. Parton, whose Dollywood Park narrowly escaped the fires, pledged on Wednesday night to donate $1,000 a month to every family that lost their home in the fire for the next six months.
Parton and her Dollywood Foundation also created the “My People Fund” to allow other people who feel so inclined to donate to the cause as well.

98% Of Counties Most At Risk For HIV Outbreaks Voted For Trump

Donald Trump talked little about HIV and AIDS on the campaign trail. But actions speak louder than words, and Trump has already chosen a governor whose policies helped cause an HIV outbreak as his vice president and a vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act and LGBT rights as his secretary of health and human services. But while HIV prevention may not be a priority for the Trump administration, a sudden outbreak is likely to disproportionately affect Trump voters who live in rural counties hit hard by the nation’s opioid epidemic.
By far the most common cause of HIV transmission is male-to-male sexual contact, which accounted for more than 26,000 new cases in 2015. But another 2,300 cases last year were the result of using infected syringes to inject drugs. Nearly a tenth of those occurred in a single rural county in southern Indiana. It’s a story Vice President-Elect Mike Pence knows well, given it was his reluctance as governor to go against his religious beliefs and institute a clean syringe exchange program that helped cause that HIV outbreak, which occurred in Scott County.
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined the 220 counties most at risk of an outbreak similar to what occurred in Scott County. Primarily clustered in Appalachia, these counties are overwhelmingly poor and rural, areas hit hard by unemployment and the opioid drug epidemic. They also have something else in common: 216 of the 220 counties voted for Donald Trump and Mike Pence on November 8, with the Republican ticket capturing 71 percent of the total vote in those most vulnerable counties, according to Vocativ’s analysis. Scott County voted 68 percent for Trump and Pence.
Because of its historical ties with advocacy by LGBT groups, advocacy for HIV prevention might appear to be a progressive, left-leaning issue. And it’s true that those hit hardest are still the black and LGBT communities. But on the particular issue of sudden outbreaks, where many are infected at once, the highest risk has shifted to rural, predominately white communities where syringe drug use has become more common and HIV awareness is lower. In other words, it’s the same overlooked population that helped drive Trump’s upset victory.

French President Francois Hollande will not seek re-election

France's President Francois Hollande confirmed Thursday he will not seek a second term in office.
French voters will go to the polls in April and May 2017, but Hollande, who has low popularity ratings, says he will not stand for re-election.
It is the first time since 1958, when France's fifth republic was created, that an incumbent president has not sought re-election.
"I am speaking to you this evening to inform you of the decision I have taken in view of the forthcoming presidential election," he said. "I have decided not to be a candidate in the presidential election."
